STRASBOURG, May 15 (FENA) - The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović issued a statement today concerning the announced Bleiburg commemoration at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Sarajevo.
"The mass planned in Sarajevo on 16 May, with the intention of commemorating soldiers and civilians who died in Bleiburg, in the aftermath of the Second World War, risks becoming a glorification of those who supported the Nazi-allied fascist Ustasha regime, complicit in the death of hundreds of thousands of human beings," said today Commissioner Mijatović.
Mijatović underlined that such a commemoration would represent an additional attack on the victims of that regime, fly in the face of the ideals and principles of antifascism on which European countries have been built after WWII, and deal a severe blow to the efforts towards reconciliation in the region.
"Political and religious leaders in the region should work together to rebuild trust between peoples and refrain from taking steps that reinforce divisions and intolerance," stressed Mijatović.
The announced mass in the Sarajevo Cathedral has stirred numerous reactions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the countries in the region. The event is to take place tomorrow, May 16.
