Čović: BiH must find enough tolerance for differences

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, May 13 (FENA) - Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Čović pointed out that individuals in BiH are re-opening wounds from the past to divert attention from other current topics in BiH society while highlighting the intention to forbids some residents to profess their religion freely and publicly.

Commenting on the views regarding the Mass that will be held in Sarajevo on May 16, Čović assessed that this violates religious freedoms and the rights of the people to religious rites.

“Civilized act of paying homage to fallen victims and praying for them is disrupted by connecting with something that this Mass is not. No matter how much someone wanted to show it like that, there is no place for hatred and extremism in the mass, it will never be a component of it,” Čović explained.

He also expressed concern about the public call for lynching, especially to Cardinal Vinko Puljić and the entire Croat people for holding a mass for innocent victims of crime, he pointed out that repeated defamation endangers the survival of mutual trust, which is key to making any progress in BiH.

He condemns all crimes, whoever committed them and at any time, calling it necessary to look at all historical facts and allow every innocent victim to having the right to piety.

“The fact is that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a multinational state that must find enough strength and tolerance in itself for the differences that make it the way it is. Like it or not, Sarajevo belongs to all of us who live in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Čović underlined.

The Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina emphasized that relations between nations and religions must be built through mutual respect and appreciation of differences, the Press Service of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced.
