Rais Kavazović: The Catholic Church has the right to make autonomous decisions

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, May 12 (FENA) - Raisu-l-ulama of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina Husein effendi Kavazović stated that the Catholic Church has the right to make decisions autonomously and, when it comes to the ceremonial rites, no one has the right to forbid them anything.

Speaking about the upcoming Mass for the victims of Bleiburg in the Sarajevo Cathedral, in an interview with Voice of America (VoA), Kavazović added that the reactions in Sarajevo show that the responsibility was assigned to the wrong address and that it was not a good thing.

"The main sponsor of the event is the Parliament of the Republic of Croatia. Politicians in Sarajevo, instead of addressing responsibility to politicians, are trying to put it on the Catholic Church. There is a political responsibility of Croatia, but it is easier to attribute everything to the church. Why is Croatia marking the commemoration in this way if it is controversial? The cardinal will lead the mass in Sarajevo and that is his obligation to the faithful. In Sarajevo, secular and religious, that is, religious and political, have merged, and probably the cardinal did not pay enough attention to that," said the Rais-l-ulama.

According to him, Croats in BiH have more confidence in the church than in Croatian politics. He noted that in no case should Muslims in BiH point criticism towards the cardinal and the Catholic Church.

"Protests that have been announced must not happen. We need to remain dignified. Some are trying to connect it with the city, but Sarajevo is not marking anything. The Catholic Church has a mass in Sarajevo and it should remain in the cathedral, nothing should happen outside of that. Someone probably wants disagreements between Muslims and Catholics or someone else, but we need to respect each other," Kavazović added.

In these days, as he added, when we celebrate the Day of the Victory over Fascism the focus should be on the victims of fascism, especially the Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Kavazović pointed out that it was the obligation of us all to mark the Victory Day.

"There were people in Bleiburg who committed the worst crimes, and there were probably innocent people as well. Religious communities should not be asked to establish facts that should have been established by states, state courts, and history. We failed to do it on time and it is not right to now put the burden onto one religious community," concluded Kavazović.
