SARAJEVO, May 3 (FENA) - In the past 24 hours, we have had ten new coronavirus cases out of 557 tested. In total, 938 citizens are positive for coronavirus in the Federation of BiH so far, out of 19.033 tested, Member of the Crisis Staff of the FBiH Ministry of Health and Assistant Minister for Public Health Goran Čerkez said in a statement today.

He stressed that there are 39 hospitalized coronavirus patients and two are currently on a ventilator.

“Currently, 426 persons have been recovered, and 41 in the past 24 hours,” said Čerkez, adding that FBiH recorded 33 deaths so far.

“The situation is still under control, stable and we continue to monitor the epidemiological situation and accordingly we will propose measures to the Civil Protection Crisis Staff,” emphasized Čerkez.

Responding to a journalist's question about the death rate from coronavirus infection in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Čerkez said the mortality rate is now between 3.3 and 3.5 percent, which is a satisfactory level if compared to other countries.

He stated that not only can we look at the mortality rate in our country, we should also look at the mortality rate in Europe, and stressed that the coronavirus pandemic has blocked all the economies of the world.

“Mortality in Belgium is 16 percent, Spain 12, Italy, England about 15 percent. These countries have very high mortality rates and these countries have also experienced problems with the economy. There has never been a greater number of unemployed in the world. We have situation like this because we have taken timely measures and managed to respond to the first blow but I keep repeating that the epidemic is not over, and we will see what awaits us in September and October,” said Čerkez.

Talking about how many tests are being done, he said a sufficient number is being done.

“Targeted Covid-19 testing is still being done. Health workers are tested, according to the recommendation of the World Health Organization, to prevent virus entry into health care institutions and employees of social institutions. All those who have any symptoms that occur, fever, sore throat, nausea, are also tested. On this basis, the number of tests has never been limited. It can be tested if epidemiologists consider it necessary,” Čerkez said.
