SARAJEVO, April 13 (FENA) - The Board of Directors of the BH Journalists Association urges employers in the media branch to halt layoffs for journalists and other media professionals as an economic measure and response to the financial crisis within the media industry caused by the coronavirus epidemic and drastic cuts in commercial and other income.
With regret and protest, BH journalists received information about the termination of employment contracts to a significant number of journalists and other media professionals at the daily newspaper 'Oslobodjenje', as well as an announcement of similar procedures in at least ten media outlets in different parts of the country.
"BH journalists are urging the owners and the Oslobodjenje management to reconsider their decision and try to preserve the jobs and look for other, alternative ways to overcome financial difficulties.
We are fully aware of the fact that, as a journalists' association, we have no legal authority, nor we can pressure the owners of the media, or even the owners of Oslobodjenje, what economic measures they would adopt, but we can ask that the redundancies, if necessary, be carried out lawfully, without discrimination, in consultation with the unions and with full protection of the labor and social rights of journalists.
If nothing is done about this issue, BH journalists will invite the media to boycott all press conferences and events organized by authorities and crisis staffs in BiH, the BH Journalists Association said in a statement.
