City of Sarajevo marks April 5 as the Siege Day

SARAJEVO, April 5 (FENA) – Chairman of the City of Sarajevo Council Igor Gavrić and Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka laid white roses at the memorials on the Suada Dilberović and Olga Sučić Bridge, the Memorial for murdered children of besieged Sarajevo and in the Big Park on the occasion of April 5 - Day marking the 1992-1995 siege of Sarajevo.

The City of Sarajevo officially marks April 5 as the Siege Day, in memory of the victims, veterans and residents of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo survived and defeated the longest siege of a city in the history of warfare.

The Mayor of Sarajevo Skaka pointed out that it is a duty and an obligation to the city, victims and defenders as well as to the citizens who lived under the siege to mark 1.425 days of the siege.

“We must never forget the fact that Sarajevo survived and defeated the longest and most difficult siege in the history of war, during which more than 11.000 of our fellow citizens were killed, 1.601 of them children. We must preserve our memory, we must pay tribute to the victims, veterans and citizens, we must know and spread the truth so that the evil can never be repeated to anyone,” said Mayor Skaka, the press service of the City of Sarajevo announced.
