SARAJEVO, March 6 (FENA) - A panel discussion held at the Bosniak Institute in Sarajevo on the occasion of International Women's Day sent out messages that this year, British and Austrian embassies in BiH will devote activities to achieve 50 percent female participation in government institutions.

Former MP in the BiH Parliament Maja Gasal-Vražalica spoke about her experience as the youngest member of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, and that after leaving the Democratic Front she decided to set up the Academy for Women.

“Before deciding to join one of the political parties, you need to read the party's statute to see if it recognizes women at all and whether there are policies that stand out as those that are women oriented. It is only on this basis that you form your views on your political engagement,” said Gasal-Vražalica.

After her parliamentary engagement, she was unemployed for six months because she said the present political parties in power resented her, as this is still a system still present on the political scene in BiH.

“I asked myself whether to leave or stay in the country or start an independent business. I decided on the third option, and in 2018, I founded the Academy for Women,” she added.

Slovenian Ambassador to BiH Zorica Bukinac said she has always wanted to pursue the profession of complete security.

“What was of strategic importance in the first place was the upbringing, that is, the values that were transferred to me during the period of secondary socialization. To put it simply, it was an environment and values where it was not an atmosphere where you could ask a young woman what she wanted to do in her life, and when she said what it was, the response would be, "that is not a profession for a woman," Bukinac emphasized, adding that women comprise more than 50 percent workforce on the labor market in Slovenia.

For the first time, a woman was appointed Austrian Ambassador to BiH, as well as her deputy Nicola Ann Hardwick, who said at the debate that this embassy plans specific activities in order to have more women in BiH's leading positions so that we have 50 percent women representation.

In this regard, projects and funds are being prepared and will be discussed soon in public.

Also, Deputy British Ambassador to BiH Ruth Wiseman confirmed that the British Embassy in BiH is currently working to define activities aimed at achieving greater equality of women in our country.

This year, special attention will be paid to empowering women and for them to gain more confidence to become involved in political life in this year's local elections.

“Changes in BiH are possible due to the fact that women make up more than 50 percent of the population,” Wiseman concluded at the discussion.
