SARAJEVO, March 1 (FENA) – On the occasion of the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a solemn ceremony in the Sarajevo City Hall was held in the presence of numerous officials - representatives of all governmental structures, the diplomatic corps, veterans' organizations, the BiH Parliamentarians’ Forum, the academic community and numerous guests.
BiH Presidency Member Šefik Džaferović addressed the guests and said that March 1, Independence Day, is fatefully tied to the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina as one of the most important national holidays.
President of the Parliamentarians’ Forum 92-96 Miro Lazović also addressed the guests and said that March 1 is Bosnia and Herzegovina's birthday.
He recalled the historical processes and difficult political circumstances, the delicate position that Bosnia and Herzegovina found itself in when it regained its independence in a referendum held on February 29 and March 1, 1992.
BiH Independence Day was celebrated today on various occasions in BiH, when officials of all levels of government, veterans, representatives of the Armed Forces of BiH, the non-governmental sector and citizens paid tribute to the defenders of the state.
They laid flowers and said prayers at the Kovači cemetery in Sarajevo at the central memorial and the grave of the first president of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović.
Delegations then laid flowers at the Eternal Flame Memorial in the city center, as well as at the Memorial for the murdered children of besieged Sarajevo during the 1992-1995 war, and paid respects to the killed police officers in the Big Park and in the Vraca Memorial Park.
