MOSTAR, February 28 (FENA) - The City of Mostar has sent an official letter to the Office of the High Representative (OHR), the Delegation of the European Union to BiH and foreign embassies in Sarajevo requesting their engagement in addressing the problem with the regional landfill location Uborak.
"After the latest developments and the blockade of the landfill and the fact that Mostar does not have a City Council that may designate any new landfill sites, we urge you to get involved in solving of this extremely complex problem in all possible ways that will be of use and wellbeing for all citizens of the City of Mostar," it said in a letter from the Administration of the City of Mostar.
It is also noted in the letter that the Uborak regional landfill site was opened in 1960. Its modernization over the past ten years has been coupled with significant invested resources from the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the World Bank.
However, residents of the surrounding settlements and activists of the citizens’ initiative ‘Because it concerns us’ argue that the capacity of the landfill has long been exceeded and are seeking its rehabilitation and closure.
During 2019, the local activists blocked the access to Uborak landfill on several occasions, and the latest blockade occurred on Saturday, February 22, which is why the waste from the Mostar streets has not been cleared for the past seven days.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) recently expressed its support for the local population and the activists which is why the City of Mostar expressed disappointment with this attitude of USAID.
