SARAJEVO, February 28 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Šefik Džaferović said that March 1, the BiH Independence Day is most certainly one of the most significant dates in the country's history.

“In times when black clouds loomed over Bosnia and Herzegovina, and dark forces that attacked our country seeking to destroy Bosnia and Herzegovina, the citizens rose to the occasion and on February 29 and March 1, 1992, they took to a referendum in accordance with the Constitution, the international laws, saying that they want independent Bosnia and Herzegovina, that they want freedom, they said no to oppression, to slavery and to the disintegration of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Džaferović on Thursday evening at a reception held in the BiH Presidency building in Sarajevo on the occasion of the BiH Independence Day.

He underlined that this is something that does not happen often in the history of countries and that the referendum was a thing of tremendous significance.

“The generation that accomplished this has done a monumental thing. We must never forget that,” Džaferović said.

He stressed that it would be difficult to find a country in the world that faced these kinds of decisions, but still, almost two-thirds of citizens chose the path of independence.

Bosnia and Herzegovina this Sunday celebrates the 28th anniversary since it has declared independence, and on this occasion, the BiH Presidency Chairman Željko Komšić and the Presidency member Šefik Džaferović hosted a gala reception on Thursday evening at the State Presidency building in Sarajevo.

The BiH Independence Day is celebrated on March 1. Adult citizens of the then Socialist Republic of BiH voted for independence in a referendum that took place February 29 and March 1, 1992.

2,073,568 voters turned out for the referendum, which represented a turnout of 63.6 percent. Of those, 99.7 percent voted in favor of independence and 0.3 percent opposed that decision.

On February 28, 1995, the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina decided to celebrate March 1 as the Independence Day. On April 6, 1992, the European Community recognized Bosnia and Herzegovin as an independent and sovereign state.
