SARAJEVO, February 27 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina will mark its 28th anniversary of independence on Sunday and on that occasion members of the BiH Presidency Željko Komšić and Šefik Džaferović hosted a reception tonight in Sarajevo.

Komšić addressed the guests at a ceremony to commemorate the day when BiH citizens decided to live in a sovereign and independent BiH and said that everyone is proud to remember March 1 as the day when BiH became independent state.

“That day was the day when the citizens of BiH, using the democratic mechanism of the referendum, expressed their civic will for sovereign and independent state of BiH and thus created preconditions for its international recognition,” Komšić reminded.

BiH Presidency Chairman noted that in the period that followed, BiH also showed its indestructibility, and its citizens have done their best to preserve its international legal subjectivity.

He added that no one could kill either the hope or the belief in what they stood for, and they stood up for the same state they stand for today, for the state of equal citizens, where there will always be room for all.

Komšić said that most BiH citizens have always wanted such a state, but it is necessary to resist all attempts that want to divide it, whether political, party or ideological.

We also give and should extend our hand to those who did not vote for the independence of the state of BiH, or are still opposed to independence and sovereignty. My message, to my fellow citizens, is honest, short and clear. This is your country too. Nobody can take it away from you. It is ours, let’s make it better than it is today, if not for our own sake then at least for the sake of the children who come after us,” Komšić stressed.

He believes that this can only be achieved if one avoids disrespecting and misunderstanding one another, avoiding unnecessary fears, bypassing the law and undermining state institutions which must be at the service of everyone equally.

He assessed that citizens, society and the state were faced with the fulfillment of numerous conditions in order to approach the safer environment of living within the broader international associations, which was outlined in the foreign policy priorities.

But he stressed that no one outside this common country could have greater interest and benefit for the team than those who share the same climate, because no greater friends can be found in the world unless they are found amongst themselves.

“In the end, not escaping and being ashamed of our Balkan temper, we still want to be an ordinary, normal, peaceful and safe country. I congratulate all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina March 1st, Independence Day of the State of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” concluded BiH Presidency Chairman Željko Komšić.

A large number of guests attended the ceremony at the BiH Presidency, including representatives of state and FBiH institutions, international organizations, the diplomatic and military diplomatic corps, and numerous officials from the political and public life of BiH.
