TI BiH: Most complaints for corruption in judiciary and administration

FENA Press release

BANJA LUKA, February 27 (FENA) - Transparency International in BiH (TI BiH) handled 173 corruption cases last year, the largest number of complaints pertaining to government and the judiciary (55 percent).

Citizens have made more than a thousand calls on a free corruption reporting line to this non-governmental organization, where the Center for providing legal assistance in the fight against corruption operates.

The number of applications submitted by the so-called “whistleblowers” significantly decreased, and TI believe that it shows that citizens still lack confidence in the existing legal mechanisms for protecting persons reporting corruption from their immediate work environment.

At a press conference in Banja Luka, TI BiH officials said there was a particular concern that a growing number of complaints related to flagrant violations of basic human rights and freedoms, such as the right to freedom of movement, where they singled out the case of activists from the citizens’ group "Justice for David".

In their applications, citizens reported non-transparent spending of money, inefficient work of administration, long court proceedings, unprofessional behavior of judges and prosecutors, as well as conflicts of interest of executive officials and elected representatives.

In 2019, TI BiH won 19 administrative disputes in procedures for exercising the right of access to information and filed seven criminal charges against officials and responsible persons, on suspicion of committing corruption offenses.
