SARAJEVO, February 25 (FENA) - Trial International and the ZFD Forum in Bosnia and Herzegovina today presented the publication "Naming War Crimes by Their Real Name" in Sarajevo, by the authors Leila Gačanica and Caroline Finkeldey.

The aim of the publication is to initiate a constructive dialogue on the need to pass laws to ban denial of genocide, the Holocaust, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The publication's author and independent legal adviser and researcher Lejla Gačanica said "the publication is the result of a joint initiative between the two organizations and addresses the ways in which, in today's BiH, 25 years after the end of the armed conflict, we have or do not have denial, glorification, support or promoting war crimes and war criminals".

“What is very important to say for this publication is that it has not only dealt with the identification of these phenomena, that is, where they exist, but also how they affect our society. What is devastating is that these phenomena are much more intense today than they were before. The other thing is how we should deal with this. We can deal with this through regulations and laws. What we don't have today is a ban on denying, minimizing, justifying war crimes, which include crimes against humanity, crimes against civilians, but also genocide and the Holocaust,” Gačanica said.

Trail International Office Manager in BiH Selma Korjenić said that the organization deals with the protection of human rights, and specifically in BiH, the protection of the rights of war victims from the past war.

“We, as an organization are dedicated to the protection of the rights of war victims and with the main objective of combating impunity, are aware that this process is very important. The process of fighting impunity has brought about a lot of positive changes; however, it is slow and not adequate enough to continue the process of dealing with the past. From our daily lives we see that the judgments given by both the Tribunal and the domestic courts are unfortunately negated. War crimes are glorified. Through media coverage, we see, especially in some smaller communities, such occurrences happen.

We as an organization are concerned with these cases of heightened relativization. We believe that it is high time to create a strong discourse that would show that what is happening lately is not good, that society should not think in this way, and that we must combat such phenomena,” said Korjenić.
