SARAJEVO, February 24 (FENA) - Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo, Nihad Fejzić, attended a research visit to prestigious US universities, under the auspices of the Cornell and Colorado veterinary colleges, with associates from the Sarajevo Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and a representative of the Banja Luka Veterinary Institute.

The visit was implemented as part of the implementation of the project "Capacity Building in BiH for the Control of Infectious Diseases of Animals", which was supported by the United Nations Atomic Energy Agency with 800,000 KM.

"Bearing in mind that the visit was sponsored by the United Nations Atomic Energy Agency, we discussed future cooperation and our American colleagues supported the further development of scientific and research capacities of the Sarajevo Veterinary Faculty. We have been invited to become a member of the American Association of Veterinary Colleges,” Fejzić told FENA.

Fejzić explains that Cornell is the second most valued university in the world in the field of veterinary science, with a budget eight times higher than the budget of the Sarajevo Canton. This university is located in Ithaca, New York, and has been around for almost 150 years. The visiting team from BiH at this higher education institution had the opportunity to be part of the team of the most up-to-date Diagnostic Center in the world.

On this occasion, the Veterinary Medicine College at Cornell University donated additional valuable equipment for the molecular laboratory to the Sarajevo Veterinary Faculty, and experiences were exchanged on how to be more effective in controlling animal diseases.

“A delegation of four experts that I led did a visit to the most powerful animal disease control centers in the United States, at Cornell and Colorado State College. The readiness of countries for the early, prompt and accurate diagnosis of infectious animal diseases, especially those that can be transmitted to humans, is a priority today. Unfortunately, we are witnessing the negative and devastating consequences of these diseases,” Fejzić emphasized.

He emphasized that the delegation from Bosnia and Herzegovina, while visiting its counterparts in the USA, saw the possibilities of developing a new concept that could be applied in BiH that would help establish a biosecurity framework creating better conditions for livestock development and food production.

Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Nihad Fejzić, speaking about cooperation with the UN Atomic Energy Agency, pointed out that the institution donated the up-to-date equipment for molecular diagnostics of infectious animal diseases to the Veterinary Faculty in Sarajevo and the Banja Luka Veterinary Institute last year. Part of this equipment should arrive in Sarajevo in the coming days.
