BRČKO, February 20 (FENA) - The right to a language is one of the basic human rights, but this right is not respected worldwide today, and in some parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well,” told FENA the Head of the Department for Education in the Government of the Brčko District of BiH Senad Osmanović.

He points out that the issue of studying the mother language in Brčko has been successfully resolved.

In primary and secondary schools in the Brčko District of BiH, students of different nationalities attend classes together, while mother language classes are carried out in groups formed according to the mother language the students opt for.

“Past experience shows that this is a good solution because it guarantees the freedom to learn the mother language for each student. So far, there have been no cases where someone has had a problem with this type of approach, and besides, it has proven to be sustainable and functional,” said Osmanović.

He believes that the Brčko District model of teaching mother language could be an example of a good solution for the issue of teaching mother language in other multiethnic communities in BiH, and on this occasion congratulated students and teachers International Mother Language Day.

In 1999, UNESCO proclaimed February 21 as International Mother Language Day at the 30th session of the General Assembly at the proposal of Bangladesh.
