FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 16 (FENA) - Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić attended an audience with Pope Francis on Saturday in the Vatican, after which he met with the Holy See's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Komšić briefed Pope Francis on the current political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Komšić and Pope Francis discussed the relations between the Holy See and Bosnia and Herzegovina and it was stressed that the Vatican would continue to provide constructive political support to BiH as a multi-ethnic state and support its path to EU and NATO integration.

Komšić stressed that for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the only true and right solution is its membership in NATO and the European Union. The need to ensure respect for basic human rights and all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina was also reaffirmed.

The two also discussed common interests at the regional and international levels, such as peace and security, fostering dialogue and how to respond to the challenges facing the Western Balkan countries.

At the end of the meeting, Komšić presented to Pope Francis a special gift, an authentic work of art by Sarajevo academic sculptor Enes Sivac, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, as well as an original replica of the Parish Church of St. Joseph at the Marijin Dvor in Sarajevo, both made especially for the occasion.

Komšić and Secretary of State of the Holy See Cardinal Pietro Parolin touched on the ratification and implementation of the documents of the Basic Treaty between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Holy See, which Komšić signed in 2007.

The interlocutors concluded that it was of great importance for Bosnia and Herzegovina to respect the basic human rights of all citizens, as well as peace and security in the region.

This time too, the Holy See's concern was expressed about the continued departure of young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated the BiH Presidency.
