BIJELJINA, February 11 (FENA) - BiH Council of Ministers Chairman Zoran Tegeltija stressed today the need for more efficient work of the BiH Border Police, in terms of the flow of people and goods, and to secure the so-called green border against illegal migrants.

Due to an inadequate earlier reaction, he said, there are more migrants in BiH today than in Serbia, which is two to three times bigger than BiH.

“Migrant crisis is a security and then a humanitarian issue. This is not only a problem of the BiH Border Police, but of all security agencies, with the necessary coordination, and I expect greater support from the international community in this regard," said Tegeltija, after meeting with Director of the BiH Border Police Zoran Galić.

It is necessary, he added, to reduce waiting at the border and to provide more technical equipment and staffing of the BiH Border Police, with the support of the Council of Ministers.

Director of the BiH Border Police Zoran Galić said that it is necessary to amend certain laws and by-laws, which have been in force for 20 years, in order to enable the institution to meet all challenges.

He recalled that before the migrant crisis, they were warned that, according to existing legal solutions, the BiH Border Police would not be able to respond to these global challenges.

He said that it is necessary to provide the necessary financial resources for its more efficient and professional work.

After the meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the Field Office "Northeast" of the Border Police in Bijeljina, it was said that 85 percent of police officers were engaged in border control, and only 15 percent were in control of the so-called green border, 1,603 kilometers in line.

“This means that one police officer has been deployed for 25 kilometers. European standard is one police officer at 900 meters in an uninhabited area,” added Galić.

Before the joint working meeting on the socio-economic reforms of the Head of the EU Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative Ambassador Johann Sattler with EU representatives, BiH policy makers and key international partners, Tegeltija said that he would analyze ways to implement the socio-economic reforms he expects some to be accelerated.
