SNSD urges for citizens to elect a mayor of East Sarajevo in direct election

EAST SARAJEVO, February 9 (FENA) - East Sarajevo is the only city in the entity of Republika Srpska (RS) that has more than one municipality, and its functioning has been determined by legal provisions adopted in 1993 and last amended in 2005.

It is absurd that the basic text of the law refers to local communities that are territorially outside this BiH entity today.

The new law on the City of East Sarajevo, proposed by the SNSD MPs in the RS National Assembly, except for these changes, also stipulates that the mayor is elected by the citizens in general direct elections for a period of four years in accordance with the election regulations.

They remind that in all local communities in the RS, mayors or municipal mayors are directly elected, while only in the city of East Sarajevo, the election of mayor is made by a majority vote of the total number of city councilors in accordance with the election laws of the RS and BiH.

"We believe that the directly elected mayor will have more legitimacy and that it is important for every citizen to know who is the mayoral candidate they can vote for, i.e., who will represent them in the best possible way, which will contribute to a stronger bond between the executive power and citizens, but also place more responsibility on the directly elected mayor," it is stated in the explanation of this law, which was proposed to the RS Parliament in an emergency procedure since this is an election year.

It is recalled that practice has shown that a mayor is elected for a mayor who did not have enough votes to be a councilor in the municipal assembly or was a local mayoral candidate but was not elected, and it is quite illogical for a man who did not pass he is elected mayor at the local level because he cannot gain the confidence of the citizens as evidenced by the election results.
