SARAJEVO, January 30 (FENA) - The European Center for Infectious Disease Control has informed the public that there is moderate possibility of occurrence of coronavirus in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but if it does, our task is to prevent the spread of the disease, said today the Federation of BiH Assistant Minister of Health Goran Čerkez.

He pointed out that, according to information released yesterday, 6,650 people have so far been infected with coronavirus, 90 percent are from China, 20 percent have a more severe clinical situation and that the mortality rate is two percent. He added that there are infected individuals in 15 countries outside China and that nine cases have been registered in Europe.

As for the testing, Čerkez said that BiH has the ability to diagnose coronavirus but the cure has not been found yet.

A series of meetings were held today with representatives of the ministries of foreign and civil affairs, the BiH Border Police and all cantonal public health institutes.

Also, there are a number of companies in BiH where Chinese people work, and Čerkez emphasized that they have already taken monitoring measures and that the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs has suggested avoiding unnecessary travel to China.

Director of the Public Health Institute of the Federation of BiH, Davor Pehar, said that all citizens should pay more attention to personal hygiene, and that washing hands and protection against coughing and sneezing are the most effective measures in preventing the spread of the virus.

“There is still no vaccine, and until we have it, we have basic measures to prevent the spread of the disease,” Pehar said.

Head of the Epidemiology Sector of the FBiH Public Health Institute Sanjin Musa emphasized that they have been monitoring the coronavirus situation from the onset and that they have produced guidelines and information for healthcare professionals, passengers and procedures for monitoring of the passengers.

A representative of the Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in BiH, Mirza Palo, pointed out that the WHO Advisory Committee on Emergency Situations is currently in session in Geneva and that they expect further recommendations in the coming hours to combat the spread of the infection.
