Čović: The EU expects us to show concrete progress in the next two months

BRUSSELS, January 29 (FENA) - We have been clearly told that we must make progress in the next two months, primarily in the aspect of electoral legislation. If we can do that, then it is certain that we will get a candidate status for EU membership in May, told FENA the Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina and HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović, summarizing the talks that were held in Brussels in the past two days.

Together with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, Denis Zvizdić (SDA), he held a series of meetings at EU headquarters with the leadership of the European Parliament, presidents of the parliaments of the EU Member States, representatives of the European Commission and the European People's Party.

“In all the talks I emphasized that we have made good steps forward. The real dynamic is that by the end of February we should inform the EU on the progress we have made, in order to eventually harmonize the Election Law by the end of March. I said that there would be many, especially in Sarajevo, who would want nothing to happen in that area and for the status quo to remain. This would be devastating for BiH, as it is certain that at the May meeting in Zagreb, North Macedonia and Albania will receive full support for opening negotiations with the EU, and it is our interest that we also obtain a candidate status in the same time frame,” said Čović.

He ruled out the possibility of European mediation in an attempt to reach political agreement in BiH to amend electoral legislation.

“The EU has realized that this does not make any sense and that it was an old story. They made it clear that if we wanted it, we would do it ourselves. This is what the HDZ and the SDA are trying to do as political leading representatives of the two peoples. If we don't do it, then everything any interference from outside would be in vain.

It will simply be judged as our inability and we will stay out of the European context. Obviously, we have to do it ourselves. We have invited our friends from the EU, including the Enlargement Commissioner and the President of the European Parliament, to visit us, but all of them are ready to come and support us, to help us, but only if we show that we have a common denominator with regard to the amendments to the Election Law. If that does not happen, no one would want to be bothered with us,” Čović warned.

He announced that as soon as he returns to BiH he would try to reach an agreement with the SDA President Bakir Izetbegović and everyone else as soon as possible to speed up the process.

“Everything is in our hands. If we continue dealing with ourselves, like for the last two years, then we have nothing to hope for on the European path,” Čović concluded in a statement to FENA.
