IOM denies media allegations on 'suspension of support to RS MoI'

FENA Muamer Selimbegovic

SARAJEVO, January 28 (FENA) - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) denied media allegations today "that the IOM has decided to suspend support to police officers of the Republika Srpska Ministry of Interior (RS MoI), who have been engaged to assist the BiH Border Police".

Commenting on FENA's query regarding the allegations, IOM points out that the organization did not forward information through its communication channels regarding texts published in the media concerning support to RS police officers who are engaged to assist BiH Border Police in control of the border with the Republic of Serbia.

Namely, the support to the police officers of the Ministry of Interior of the Republika Srpska is a regular operational activity supported by the IOM, with other activities that are part of the response to the current migration situation, and within the agreed project proposal financially supported by EU funds. According to the IOM, these activities have been planned by 31 January 2020, in cooperation with the BiH Border Police, according to the project proposal and accompanying budget.

At the same time, they recall that at today's meeting in the EU Delegation, attended by representatives of IOM, state institutions involved in dealing with the migration situation and the EU, activities were defined that the EU will continue its support by 31 March this year.

The IOM states that, among other things, the support for police officers of the RS MoI, engaged to assist the BiH Border Police in monitoring the border with Serbia, has been approved.

As they further state, no additional decision has been made, and within its mandate, the IOM does not have such access or competence in the Missions of countries in which it is established.

We kindly ask you to correct the previously published information which misleads the general public and which can cause unjustified panic among the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also puts IOM at a disadvantage and may create the atmosphere of distrust in our intentions, which is to assist the BiH authorities in providing an adequate humanitarian response to the migrant situation in BiH, stated IOM in response to FENA's inquiry.
