Šarović-Sattler: Instead of tensions, create conditions for fair elections

FENA Press release

BANJA LUKA, January 28 (FENA) - BiH authorities must urgently work on amendments to the Election Law to create basic conditions for holding fair October elections, Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Johann Sattler and SDS President Mirko Šarović stated today.

"Unfortunately, there is no willingness of key political factors in the Republika Srpska to secure the conditions for holding fair elections, although they are reportedly talking about it publicly. Such a situation suits them, which is why, unfortunately, radical changes to the electoral law in our country have no chance," Šarović said.

The interlocutors agreed that at the moment at least the amendments that could be made, such as the introduction of video surveillance and scanning of ballots, should be insisted on, which is common practice in most European countries. Only then, it is possible to restore voters' confidence in the electoral process to a certain extent, the SDS stated.

Šarović also stressed that it is necessary to secure consensus on the obligation to return the mandate to political parties in order to prevent a permanent violation of the electoral will of citizens.

In addition to the election law, the officials discussed the need for reform of the public service policy in order for it to truly be a service for all its citizens.
