SARAJEVO, January 28 (FENA) - Adequate legislation is needed in BiH for effective protection of personal data, it was stressed today at a press conference of the BiH Personal Data Protection Agency in Sarajevo, marking the European Data Protection Day.

The Agency Director Petar Kovačević pointed out that the reform of EU legislation in the field of personal data protection took place in 2016, and that Bosnia and Herzegovina has committed itself to harmonize its laws with the EU acquis.

“The Agency informed the Parliamentary Assembly and the Council of Ministers of BiH of the need to transpose this legislation, after which we drafted the Law on Personal Data Protection adopted by the Interdepartmental Working Group last year,” said Kovačević.

He added that the draft law was submitted to the BiH Council of Ministers and he hopes it would be adopted among the first laws in the coming period.

Assistant Director of the Monitoring Section, Samira Čampara, stated that citizens should pay attention to information they publish on social networks and carefully read into their privacy policies.

She also emphasized that citizens have the right to review the legal basis and for what purpose they are asked to provide personal information from public service providers, such as banks, educational, health institutions and the like.
