BRUSSELS/SARAJEVO, January 27 (FENA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Zvizdić and Speaker of the House of Peoples Dragan Čović met today in Brussels with the EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, and briefed him on the current political, economic and social developments in BiH.

Zvizdić told FENA that they expressed their full commitment and dedication of BiH for all the processes leading us towards European integration, economic growth and development, strengthening the rule of law and further cooperation with countries in the region to ensure long-term stability and economic prosperity.

“We reiterated our commitment to adopt and implement the EU acquis. I emphasized my full commitment for the European integration as the most effective instrument for embracing European values, for speeding up all the processes of economic prosperity, ultimately for being the most important and common denominator to all aspirations of the Western Balkan countries, and that it is very important that we have continued support of the European institutions, as well as the Enlargement Commissioner, who we have invited to visit BiH and t get informed about our firm commitment to the European integration,” said Zvizdić.

What is important, he said, is that they emphasized the necessity of obtaining a candidate status, given all that has been done in the past

“We have fulfilled all the conditions, including the provision of quality answers to the European Commission's Questionnaire, and informed him that we started working on implementing the priorities of the Opinion that the European Commission published on BiH's application for EU membership,” said Zvizdić, noting that there are many good elements which can enable BiH to show its credibility and perhaps at the summit in Zagreb we can get very clear indications about out candidate status.

Zvizdić and Ćović also briefed Commissioner Varhelyi about certain problems such as the problem of entry of illegal migrants into BiH, and in this regard, requested further assistance from the European institutions.

“The EU representatives know that migrants, in principle, do not want to stay in the territory of BiH, but to go to EU countries, and in some way EU representatives want to address this in the most adequate manner, having regard to economic and humanitarian circumstances. We have made it clear that migrants from the EU, i.e., from Greece, come to BiH and want to enter the EU again, and we need technical, operational and financial assistance. That is why we expect that we will have more frequent cooperation of the European institutions with the institutions of BiH,” Zvizdić added.

Zvizdić and Čović will meet with the Western Balkans Working Group Chairman in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament Tonin Picula this afternoon.

Zvizdić noted that this is an important meeting, given that Picula is well aware of the situation in our region and has sufficient information, and that they can discuss with him the problems, their possible solution, as well as the possibilities of accelerating all activities and reforms that will bring us closer to the EU.

Zvizdić and Čović on Tuesday will participate in the Summit of the presidents of the European Parliament with the speakers of the Western Balkan parliaments in Brussels.

“For BiH, it is important to send a message of increased political stability, positive political will and consensus when it comes to the adoption of European values and the European acquis without any "if" and "when" because that is the only way to move forward faster,” said Zvizdić.
