SARAJEVO, January 23 (FENA) - The High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC) President Milan Tegeltija said today, following a session of the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, discussing the HJPC work reports for 2017 and 2018, that the main problem for better fight against organized crime and corruption in Bosnia and Herzegovina lies in poor relationship and liaison between prosecutors' offices and police agencies in BiH.
He stressed that it was not his intent to relieve anyone of their responsibility, neither the prosecution nor the police, and that he considers them “to be hiding behind one another".
“I do not think that prosecutors have enough initiative under the new legislation on conducting the investigations. On the other hand, I fear that many in the police authorities have forgotten that they are still the police and that they have both the law on internal affairs and operational and tactical competences, and that just as they know how to do things in cases of classic offenses - robberies, murders, etc., when the police have a high dose of initiative, they do not show that initiative in these other forms of crime, but I am in no way giving amnesty to the prosecutor offices,” said Tegeltija.
He added that there is a need to work on better legislation that will regulate the relationship between the police and prosecutor's offices in BiH.
Tegeltija noted that addressing this issue would significantly improve the fight against corruption and organized crime in the country.
