22,211 illegal migrants enter BiH in first nine months, most from Pakistan

SARAJEVO, January 23 (FENA) - The Council of Ministers of BiH was briefed today by the Ministry of Security regarding the state of migration in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period of April, May, June, July, August, September and October 2019.

Information prepared by the earlier convocation of the Council of Ministers regarding migration will be submitted to the BiH Presidency.

The Foreigners' Affairs Service received a report which stated that 22,211 illegal migrants entered BiH between 1 January and 30 September 2019.

In the same period, 21,157 migrants expressed their intent to apply for asylum, while 455 persons applied for asylum.

Most migrants were nationals of Pakistan (8,786 or 39.6 percent), followed by citizens of Afghanistan (2,359 or 10.6 percent), Bangladesh (1,939 or 8.7 percent), Iraq (1,843 or 8.3 percent) and Syria (1,390 or 6.3 percent).

In August last year, 3,206 illegal migrants were reported to the Foreigners' Affairs Service, which is a decrease of 23 percent compared to July, when a total of 4,166 migrants were reported. In September, there were 3,812 illegal migrants reported, an increase of 19 percent compared to August, according to the PR Office of the Council of Ministers of BiH.
