SARAJEVO, January 22 (FENA) - Although weather conditions in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina have improved, the Air Quality Index in downtown Sarajevo was 211 and is very unhealthy, as measured at 11 am at the US Embassy measuring station.

The air was also of very poor quality measured at Otoka measuring station where the Air Quality Index was 206, while at the City Hall it was 178, and at Bjelave station 156.

The PM2.5 particulate value measured at the US Embassy measuring station was 187, in Otoka 174, City Hall 137 and Bjelave 83.

PM2.5 particulate matter (PM) having a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometers can come from multiple sources such as power plants, heating plants, individual combustion plants (coal - as the worst quality of solid fuel), motor vehicles, wood burning, etc.

Because these are very small and light, fine particles they tend to stay longer in the air than heavier particles. This increases the chances of the human body or animal inhaling these particles into the lungs.

Due to the aforementioned situation regarding air quality in Sarajevo, the Eco-Action association states that persons with respiratory illnesses such as asthma could have a significant increase in symptoms and intensity.
