Filandra: Croatia's relations with BiH will not change significantly

SARAJEVO, January 6 (FENA) - Professor at the Faculty of Political Science in Sarajevo Šaćir Filandra told for FENA that the second round of presidential elections in the Republic of Croatia took place in a very democratic atmosphere, and that the elections showed a high level of political communication of candidates with their public, as well as mutual relations.

In that regard, he added, Croatia can be an example of political behavior in our environment.

Professor Filandra says that the election of Zoran Milanović was a surprise only for those not very well informed, given the fact that Milanović, by his broad political involvement, aspired and eventually succeeded in engaging enough voters and topics in a way to articulate as wide as possible of the Croatian political electoral public.

"His victory was expected for me and those who, I believe, are familiar with the political situation in Croatia. After he assumes office as President of the Republic of Croatia, relations with BiH will not change significantly. There are a number of open issues between the two countries that are undefined for various political reasons, from the status of the border to the Pelješac Bridge and beyond," Filandra said.

According to him, in the institutional sense, the Republic of Croatia has transferred part of its sovereignty to supranational institutions, such as NATO and the European Union.

"The proximity of these institutions to Bosnia and Herzegovina, conditionally, is good," he adds.

He says that the policy of the incumbent government and the new president will not change in that respect, given that foreign policy is more or less determined by supranational institutions such as the EU and NATO.

"However, since we are first neighbors who share a common history, a common future, we hope here in BiH that this half-year period of the Croatian EU Presidency, especially the enlargement meeting in May, will positively affect us and that Croatia will, regardless of these daily political divisions between political elites, treat us positively and that BiH will have both support and a positive message from Croatia," Filandra concluded in a conversation with FENA.
