SARAJEVO, December 12 (FENA) - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) remains committed to Bosnia and Herzegovina and will continue to support the necessary reforms, since a stable Bosnia and Herzegovina is of utmost importance for peace and stability in the region.

This was emphasized today at the handover ceremony at NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, held today at the Armed Forces Hall of BiH (AFBiH), at which Brigadier General William J. Edwards (United States Army) took office from the incumbent commander, Brigadier General Marty J. Bissell (United States Army).

The ceremony attendees were greeted by Commander of the Allied Joint Forces Command Naples, Admiral James G. Foggo, recalling the history of NATO's presence in BiH (IFOR, SFOR), while acknowledging the successes of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, as well as the exceptional engagement of his former commander, General Bissell, and now welcoming the new Commander General Edwards.

“NATO Headquarters Sarajevo has been helping Bosnia and Herzegovina to create a better future for 15 years and will continue to do so in the future. We are committed to a stable, secure Bosnia and Herzegovina today and tomorrow,” said General Foggo.

At the same time, he underlined that NATO Headquarters Sarajevo has been instrumental in supporting the defense and security sector reform in BiH, and that it also provides support to the European Union Force in BiH (EUFOR).

The new NATO HQ Sarajevo Commander, Brigadier General William J. Edwards also emphasized the continuity of action and commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina, expressing his readiness to continue to develop partnerships with the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina supporting the aforementioned reforms.

“We have to go further, and my intention is to go along this path together,” said General Edwards, emphasizing his determination to maintain the momentum in building relations with each other in order to ensure a stable environment in BiH.

Brigadier General Marti J. Bissell, in a very inspiring and emotional farewell speech, pointed to numerous qualities, civilizational values and peculiarities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, recalling specific examples of excellence, which, she said, most often are not recognized by the BiH authorities.

Bissell stressed that, in order to move forward, BiH must rid itself of the burdens of the past.

“Now that I am leaving BiH, I increasingly believe that every BiH citizen wants the same things ... peace, prosperity, freedom of choice, freedom to vote and live in a country where their family will be safe and protected,” said General Bissell.

The handover ceremony at NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, attended by civilian and military officials from BiH, as well as international officials, numerous guests and guests, was accompanied by a solemn program – performing the anthems, symbolic greetings and flags display, and awarding of the medals.
