There is no systematic approach to reconciliation in BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 10 (FENA) - Policies and activities of relevant reconciliation institutions in the country have not yet been fully implemented after 25 years since the end of the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is the conclusion of the recent conference entitled "Reconciliation – from rhetoric to policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina" organized by the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law.

The focus is mainly on the prosecution of war criminals and transitional justice, while building positive relationships and developing a common vision in the country are largely neglected. The current political context, given the EU's Western Balkans strategy, brings new opportunities but also new responsibilities for all actors to engage in this area.

At the end of 2018, the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law (Heidelberg, Germany) launched an initiative dedicated to reconciliation in BiH. During this year, representatives of the Foundation held several meetings with representatives of various governments and civil society organizations in BiH to identify points of consensus and possible common approaches in this area.

According to the foundation, in almost 25 years after the end of the war, neither various levels of government in BiH nor the international community systematically approached the issue of reconciliation in BiH.

As concluded at the conference, a decisive step forward in reconciliation policies and practices involves, among other things, the transfer of positive experiences from the local level, connecting actors from the government and non-governmental sectors, and additional and continued support from the international community and donors.

The results of this initial project, as well as the aforementioned events, provide a good basis on which the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law, together with local partners, will continue activities aimed at reconciliation and confidence building in BiH during 2020, the Max Planck Foundation stated.
