SC Government declares warning due to air pollution

SARAJEVO, December 8 (FENA) - Due to further deterioration of air quality, the Sarajevo Canton Government declared an emergency alert for all zones in the Sarajevo Canton at an extraordinary session yesterday, as all conditions foreseen by the Plan of intervention measures in cases of excessive air pollution are met.

The results of measurements of pollutants in the air in the Sarajevo Canton area for the previous day at all stations show level of air particles, called PM 10, climbed to 150 micrograms per cubic meter. The trend of deterioration of air quality continued, so that the average daily values for the previous day were 208 micrograms per cubic meter at the City Hall, 192 micrograms per cubic meter in Otoka and 174 micrograms per cubic meter in Ilijaš.

According to the weather forecast of the FBiH Hydrometeorological Institute in Sarajevo, stable weather is expected in the next 48 hours, with no precipitations, with light wind, temperature inversion, which fulfills all conditions to declare warning.

Population in the Sarajevo Canton is also warned not to further contribute to air pollution and that any incineration of household waste is punishable.

The appeal was also sent to the population to reduce the use of motor vehicles, PR Office of the SC Government announced.
