Parliamentarians discuss new law on protection from violence

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 2 (FENA) - With the support of UN Women and the European Union and organized by the Safe Network, association of non-governmental organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina dedicated to combating violence against women and domestic violence, 40 female parliamentarians and women's rights activists discussed new legal solutions for sustainable support for victims of domestic violence in the Federation of BiH, the Foundation of Local Democracy announced.

Parliamentarians from different political parties supported the initiative to pass a new law and stressed the need to protect every woman victim of violence, but also to work together to prevent violence against women and domestic violence.

Within the EU-funded regional program "Implementing Norms, Changing Minds", UN Women in BiH supports civil society organizations, inter alia in advocating for alignment of the legislative framework and policies for protection against violence with international standards on the elimination of violence against women and other forms of discrimination.

“As civil society organizations are most often the ones providing specialized support to victims through safe house placement, SOS lines and free legal aid, we believe it is important that this support is systematic and sustainable and that it is equally accessible to all victims of violence regardless where they live. Quality legal solutions, in line with international conventions are the right way, and political support in achieving those goals is indispensable for advocating for change,” Erma Mulabdić, on behalf of UN Women, said in the introductory part of the meeting.

Executive Director of the Foundation of Local Democracy, which coordinates the work of the BiH Safe Network, Jasmina Mujezinović, said that the legal framework in force in the FBiH does not provide victims of domestic violence with a unique support and protection system.

She stated that in 2013, BiH ratified the Istanbul Convention, which resulted in the obligation to align relevant legislation in BiH with that Convention.
