SARAJEVO, November 21 (FENA) - Nicolas Bizel, Head of EU Delegation to BiH Operations Section I, Justice and Home Affairs, Public Administration Reform, said in Sarajevo today that BiH needs to find systemic solutions to strengthen the rule of law because it is a core value of the EU, which must be fully respected by all its future member states.
Speaking to the media before the debate, "EU and BiH: Together for a Stronger Rule of Law. Review of the Rule of Law Reform in BiH through the Prism of EU Projects", Bizel noted that the Opinion given by the European Commission clearly stated that BiH must build a functioning justice system for the sake of its citizens.
“It is necessary to urgently implement sustainable reforms because the citizens of this country deserve it,” Bizel emphasized.
He recalled that earlier this week, EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jurova attended the EU-Western Balkans Justice Ministerial Forum in Skopje, where she said the European Union would continue to support the region in implementing sustainable reforms that would guarantee the rule of law and an independent judiciary.
“Yesterday, we attended the first convention on the rule of law in BiH, at which citizens and civil society representatives shared their concerns about the state of the rule of law in the country with representatives of BiH authorities and the EU. It was made clear that the rule of law is not just about fulfilling the conditions for EU membership, but that it is crucial for the benefit of all BiH citizens,” Bizel said.
He added that today's event is part of their initiative to bring new energy to the rule of law reform process in BiH and they are pleased to be able to organize it during the International Fraud Awareness Week.
The aforementioned discussion will also include a presentation of current bilateral and regional projects and encourage discussion on the importance of the rule of law reform in BiH.
