SARAJEVO, November 20 (FENA) - BiH Deputy Minister of Justice, Nezir Pivić, believes that the public debate “Right to Justice!”, organized today in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Union to BiH, shows two very important things.
“The first is that there is a serious problem in functioning of the judiciary in BiH, with an emphasis on the current leadership and functioning of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of BiH (HJPC BiH). Another important signal is the increased interest and engagement of the European Union with a view to reforming the current situation. This is evidenced by the engagement of EU senior rule of law expert Reinhard Priebe, as well as a number of other activities undertaken by the European Commission,” said Pivić.
He emphasized that the rule of law, with its emphasis on an independent judiciary, is a key theme, going through all relevant EU acts and reports by top EU officials.
According to Pivić, the political bias openly expressed by the current leadership of the HJPC, as well as the lost credibility, and damaged reputation with numerous affairs were the reason for all the alarms in Brussels and for a vigorous judicial reform.
“Instead of securing the rule of law, the HJPC is currently the biggest obstacle to its implementation. As Mr. Priebe pointed out in the coming period, strong involvement of all sections of society (legislators, governments, judges, prosecutors, media, NGOs, citizens, etc.) will be required. With the strong support of the EU, BiH should finally put in place a judicial system that will bring a sense of security and confidence for citizens,” said the Deputy Minister of Justice of BiH.
