BiH Ombudspersons congratulate Universal Children's Day

SARAJEVO, November 19 (FENA) - The ombudspersons f Bosnia and Herzegovina Nives Jukić, Ljubinko Mitrović and Jasminka Džumhur congratulated the United Nations Universal Children's Day, marked each November 20, and at the same time took the opportunity to raise awareness of the need to protect children and minors from abuse, violence and various forms of discrimination.

The Ombudspersons pay special attention to the protection of the rights of the child through the work of the Department for Monitoring the Exercise of Children's Rights, which has been operating since 2009.

This Department has handled over 170 cases in the current year related to education, health care of children, endangering and violation of the rights of the child in the so-called high-conflict divorces, protecting children from domestic violence, school, protecting the rights of migrant children, etc.

By the end of this year, the Ombudsman Institution will send Recommendations to the competent executive bodies to propose to the competent parliaments in the next period the adoption of legal provisions which, where this has not been done, will explicitly prohibit the physical punishment of the child in all environments, including the family, and through their respective ministries, take all necessary activities aimed at raising public awareness through the introduction of educational programs, including campaigns, to promote positive and alternative forms of discipline and respect for children's rights, with the participation of children, while raising awareness of the harmful effects of physical punishment child (Special Report on the Prohibition of Physical Punishment of Children).

In addition, being aware of the importance of social work centers for the protection of the rights of the child in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the coming days Recommendations will also be sent to the competent authorities regarding the situation and problems encountered by these institutions (Special Report on the Status and Problems of Social Work Centers in Bosnia and Herzegovina).

The Ombudspersons also point to the fact that the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (Concluding observations on the combined fifth and sixth report of Bosnia and Herzegovina of 30.September 2019) recommended to Bosnia and Herzegovina to provide this Institution with independence, through amendments to the Law on Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to provide adequate staffing, technical and financial resources for the Child Rights Monitoring Section. In addition, they recommend that the Ombudsman's recommendations be followed.

On the occasion of this year's celebration of Universal Children's Day, the Ombudspersons will take an active part in the work of the conference in Sarajevo (A conference organized by the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Network of Non-Governmental Organizations "A Stronger Voice for Children", Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina and UNICEF in Bosnia and Herzegovina is held on November 20, 2019, in the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina children actively participate in the conference), but also many other promotional activities. On this occasion, the Ombudspersons also say that the way we treat children today affects the way children will treat us in the future.
