SARAJEVO, November 15 (FENA) - An exhibition of photos from the First World War "The Frontline on the Soča River - Great War in the Krna Mountains 1915 - 1917" opened last night at the City Hall in Sarajevo.

Over the past ten years, this exhibition has been presented in numerous cities around the world, and its 40th edition has been presented to Sarajevans. The exhibition of photos created during one of the most terrible wars in human history will be open in the next 14 days.

Former director of the Kobarid Museum in Slovenia, Jože Šerbec, said that the exhibition shows how the former frontline looks today, but also shows the story and events that took place during the war in that territory.

"During the First World War, the Soča river (known in Italian as the Isonzo river) ran north-south along what was then the border of Austria and Italy, opening a new 600km front when Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary on 24 May, 1915 and lasted until the breakthrough near Kobarid and the breakdown of the Italian army, which occurred in three days, from October 24 to 27, 1917. So, this is a two and a half year of static warfare in the high mountains, where in some locations there has been only a minimal frontal movement. This was due to the very well-established defensive positions in the high mountains," Šerbec told FENA.

He emphasized that this front was very important for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which after the occupation and annexation in the war fought on the side of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

"As for the Bosniaks, at that time they called all soldiers from Bosnia, regardless of their religion and were mobilized into the Austro-Hungarian army and deployed on the frontlines. BiH was divided into four recruiting provinces - Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Mostar. The Fourth Regiment from Mostar fought on the Soča Frontline the longest," Šerbec explained.
