BiH should make the implementation of 14 EC recommendations its priority

SARAJEVO, November 12 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina needs to improve its legislative and institutional framework to ensure that the 14 key priorities of the European Commission's Opinion are met, which should be the sole political agenda of all political parties over the next ten years.

This was emphasized today at the presentation of the analysis "The New Dynamic of Europe! What can BiH hope for?" by Davor Vuletić, who emphasized, among other things, that the Western Balkans region is still a strategic interest of the European Union, but not its priority.

He recalled that the EU asks for the functioning of democratic institutions, the implementation of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, judicial reform and the fight against corruption, and better regional cooperation.

“In March 2017, the EU already indicated that it did not intend to import instability, and emphasized that EU aspiring countries were not ready, but also that the EU should become more stable in order to continue the enlargement process. Here in BiH, this was not something that was emphasized,” added Vuletić.

Head of the Political Department of the EU Delegation to BiH Elisabet Tomasinec said that by failure to propose the start of negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia does not mean that the enlargement process is dead, but disagreements within the EU should not be an excuse for BiH not to do its part.

She also emphasized that without significant progress in the implementation of the 14 recommendations in the Opinion, it would not be possible to award BiH a candidate status.

She stressed that the 28 Member States do not always agree on all issues, but they reach a compromise, which is why she urged BiH leaders to do the same, especially given the fact that the largest number of recommendations from the Analytical Report are technical in nature.

“Politicians tell us, but also the public, that they are united and have the same views when it comes to the progress of BiH on the EU path, but we see very little activity that would support their claims,” said Tomasinec.

It is surprising for the President of the Pan-European Union in BiH, Osman Topčagić, that after the publication of the Opinion of the European Commission on the application for BiH membership in the EU, there is no reaction or serious debate about what has been set as a priority for BiH.

He assessed that BiH should bring back the focus and priority of work on what the European Commission stated in its Opinion, noting that the topic of European integration must be a priority in public life and activities.

The Directorate for European Integration has prepared an Action Plan for the implementation of the 115 priorities identified in the Analytical Report.

The Council of Ministers of BiH also recently supported it, but nothing concrete has been done after that, it was warned today.

Foreign Policy Initiative of BiH, in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation, produced an analysis "The New Dynamic of Europe! What can BiH Hope for?"
