Korajlić: BiH is a case of a captive state trapped by corruption

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, November 11 (FENA) - Executive Director of Transparency International BiH Ivana Korajlić said today that Bosnia and Herzegovina's decision-making processes, laws, the ways institutions function, are all trapped by corruption, i.e., by the interests of a few people in the country, and that BiH is a trapped state and it is known throughout the world as such.

"It is up to us to try to work with the younger generations on how to change the situation for the better, how they can get involved and participate," Korajlić said at a lecture on “Corruption and the Captive State”, held at the University of Mostar on Monday.

She noted that arrests do happen in BiH but that they are merely a show for the public and when these cases come to court, the processes are delayed and in most of them, it never gets fully determined who is accountable.

"The role of the media is enormous. Most things would not be known if it were not for the media and if there were no those who constantly investigate the affairs, but that influence is limited if the institutions do not do anything about after the media reports about criminal behavior.

Unfortunately, we came to that when they discover a huge corruption affair and are under pressure themselves, the media are often charged and called for talks, rather than for the institutions to investigate further and prosecute those cases based on their writings, "Korajlić said.

Transparency International BiH legal aid expert Marko Vujic, who has been working for eight years on communications with citizens through the free-of-charge corruption line and providing legal advice, says their organization has worked on over 250 cases in the last year alone.
