Zvizdić reaffirms BiH's commitment to EU membership

FENA Press release

OHRID, November 10 (FENA) - BiH Council of Ministers Chairman Denis Zvizdić participated in a meeting of Western Balkan leaders in Ohrid today to discuss enhancing regional co-operation and the latest initiative to remove barriers on the free movement of goods and people.

Zvizdić reaffirmed Bosnia and Herzegovina's unambiguous commitment to EU membership, as well as continuation of the NATO integration process, which is a commitment to the current strategic and legal documents of BiH.

He stressed the importance of these processes for achieving lasting stability and prosperity of BiH and the region, and made clear that BiH is not ready to participate in any initiative or agreement that could have negative consequences for BiH's further path towards EU membership.

Zvizdić said that BiH supports regional initiatives that contribute to peace, stability, enhancement of political dialogue and strengthen regional co-operation, as well as the economic prosperity of the region.

In this regard, he emphasized BiH's commitment to further and full implementation of existing agreements, such as CEFTA, the Multi-annual Action Plan on Regional Economic Area in the Western Balkans (MAP REA), the Berlin Process, as well as strengthening regional cooperation within the Western Balkan Six (WB6).

He pointed out that cooperation within the Berlin Process has significantly strengthened cooperation in the region, in terms of implementing specific infrastructure regional projects that have great benefits for citizens and the economy, especially through the Connectivity Agenda and the Digital Agenda.

BiH Council of Ministers Chairman stressed expectations that positive examples of resolving outstanding bilateral issues, such as signing of the BiH-Montenegro Border Agreement, will continue and that concrete steps will be taken towards the conclusion of a border agreement between BiH and the remaining two neighboring countries.

He said that creating open borders for the legal flow of people and goods would boost economic integration and accelerate economic growth, but he also drew attention to the need to first ensure that the borders are established and protected in order to prevent all forms of cross-border crime.

He added that the security aspect is as important as economical, and that it is very difficult to talk about “Mini Schengen”, which he considers too ambitious that does not fit this initiative.

Zvizdić stressed the need to intensify bilateral and regional cooperation in the field of security, especially better cooperation in border control, which is ultimately a commitment of all countries and within the EU integration process.

“In the past years, our country has shown that it really is a reliable partner and has made a constructive contribution to the advancement of all forms of mutual cooperation, and we will surely remain equally committed to strengthening political dialogue, good neighborliness, peace and stability in the region. Bosnia and Herzegovina will participate in regional co-operation processes solely on the principles of sovereignty and independence, as well as equal benefits for all, while preserving the EU integration process, as the primary goal with which every regional initiative must be compatible,” said Chairman Denis Zvizdić, the BiH Council of Ministers announced.
