FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 6 (FENA) - Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel of Sweden, Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH Mirko Šarović, Minister of Environment and Tourism of FBiH Edita Djapo, RS Minister for Spatial Planning, Construction and Ecology Srebrenka Golić and the Mayor of Brčko District Siniša Milić planted a tree in Koševo Park to mark an agreement to develop an Environmental Strategy for Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period 2030+.

The initiative, which is a joint project of the Embassy of Sweden and the Stockholm Environment Institute will gather all those responsible at the BiH level in a joint effort to develop an Environmental Strategy for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This gives continuity to fruitful cooperation with state and entity ministries, as well as with the Government of the Brčko District of BiH.

The project is developed with technical support of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and Sweden in close cooperation with the aforementioned and other relevant ministries and institutions, civil society organizations and members of academic community, as well as with the EU Office in BiH, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden in BiH announced.

This joint effort and strategy will guide environmental policy over the next decade, aiming to improve the environment, mitigating and reducing the impact of climate, and increasing resilience to climate change.

It will help BiH to harmonize regulations with EU regulations and international environmental agreements and to provide more sustainable public services in areas such as water and waste management. In this way, BiH's efforts to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda are strengthened.

In addition, the project aims to strengthen the capacities of organizations, institutions, networks and other relevant actors in BiH in creation, implementation and monitoring of environmental policy measures, as well as to enhance environmental awareness among citizens.

It will also support BiH authorities in designing and implementing policy and legislation more effectively in line with EU environmental laws, to facilitate monitoring and reporting on the progress of relevant institutions, and to enhance relevant investments in sustainable energy and the environment in BiH.

"For Sweden, environmental improvement is very important and is one of the top priorities globally and locally. Therefore, I am happy that we can support Bosnia and Herzegovina in developing the Environmental Strategy and developing the Action Plan, using Swedish knowledge and expertise. The environmental sector represents 1/3 of all EU law. Establishing environmental policy is very important for this country in order to move towards EU standards," said Swedish Ambassador to BiH Johanna Strömquist.

SEI Executive Director Måns Nilsson said that the foundation of the institute's work is to support development of science-based strategies that lead to sustainable results.

Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI) is an independent international research institute that has been addressing environmental and development issues at local, national, regional and global levels for over 25 years. He has extensive experience in supporting public actors, from the municipal to the international level, in developing and implementing environmental sustainable development strategies and policies.
