Purivatra: Status of a UNESCO film city opens up new opportunities for Sarajevo

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 31 (FENA) - Director of the Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) Mirsad Purivatra welcomed the announcement by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that Sarajevo has been granted the status of a film city, assessing that this opens up great opportunities for new partnerships with other cities within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

Purivatra noted that the successful initiative and quality application of Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka and the City of Sarajevo resulted in this recognition not only for the City of Sarajevo, but also for the rich cinematographic tradition and cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Sarajevo Film Festival as well as film workers who, over the past 20 years, have achieved great success in the world of film, led by Danis Tanović, Jasmila Žbanić, Aida Begić and others.

“The status of a UNESCO film city is just the beginning of what Sarajevo can become in the next four years by implementing a serious and ambitious plan,” Purivatra said.

He added that through various projects and support of the City of Sarajevo, the Sarajevo Canton and the Federation of BiH, as well as connecting them to international productions, significant expansion of film and TV production can happen.

He noted that the production of quality audiovisual content, as the primary goal of the initiative, will enable quality film education for young people and their employment in the film and other creative industries.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network brings together a total of 18 film cities. In addition to Sarajevo, this year's UNESCO film city status was awarded to the German city of Potsdam, known for its famous film studio and film amusement park Babelsberg, the Indian city of Mumbai as the center of Bollywood, the Spanish city of Valladolid and New Zealand's Wellington.

The status of a UNESCO film city is given to cities that have a rich history of cinematography, recognizable film festivals, significant film locations and production infrastructure and are dedicated to the development and promotion of filmmaking.

The Network today gathers 46 members in total, with the 66 urban settlements designated to join as of 31 October, marking the World Cities' Day.

“We are glad that Sarajevo joined the UNESCO Network of Creative Cities. Successful initiative and a quality application filed by Mayor Abdulah Skaka and the City of Sarajevo resulted in this recognition not only for the City of Sarajevo but also for the rich Bosnian film tradition and cultural heritage,” said SFF director Mirsad Purivatra.
