Špirić and Krišto discuss political situation with French Senate President

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 25 (FENA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, Nikola Špirić and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly Borjana Krišto held talks with French Senate President Gerard Larcher today in Strasbourg, on the sidelines of the European summit of Presidents of Parliament in Strasbourg.

Congratulating the Speakers of the Parliaments and the Senate of France on their successful presidency of the Council of Europe's summit of Presidents of Parliament, top PBS BiH officials briefed Larcher on the political situation in BiH, emphasizing the fact that no government was formed a year after the elections at the Federation of BiH level, state level and in several cantons.

Špirić and Krišto warned that one of the consequences of the stalemate in government formation was that the PA BiH did not elect members of the Delegation to the CoE Parliamentary Assembly.

The particular topic of discussion was the issue of respecting the provisions of the Constitution of BiH, or Annex 4 of the Dayton Peace Agreement, when it comes to BiH.

They also pointed to the need to respect the decision of the Constitutional Court of BiH, which stated the force of the provision of the BiH Election Law, contrary to the constitutional regime under which each constituent people had the right to elect legitimate representatives in the institutions of government in BiH.

In this regard, the President of the Senate of France said that solutions to all contentious issues must be found within BiH, where the crisis in the formation of government complicates the situation regarding the country's membership of the Council of Europe and causes a deadlock on the European path.

He said that BiH could always count on the support and assistance of the French Senate.

They also discussed the promotion of good bilateral relations between the two countries, especially in the economic field. Larcher was urged to encourage French investors to invest more in BiH, especially in the areas of energy and trade.

Possible topics for dialogue between the Presidents of the European Senates were discussed, and the proposal of top BiH officials to accept the role of senates in national mixed societies and states was adopted in Sarajevo, the BiH Parliamentary Assembly said.
