BiH PA delegation and TC leaders discuss various aspects of migrant crisis

FENA Press release

TUZLA, October 22 (FENA) - A delegation of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly (BiH PA) gathered around the Integration and Security Issues Club of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, supported by the International Republican Institute (IRI), visited Tuzla and Tuzla Canton (TC) Prime Minister Denijal Tulumović today, as part of their visit to areas facing the issue of migrants' accommodation and transit in BiH.

Prime Minister Tulumović and ministers in the TC Government briefly presented the current situation and experiences and problems they are facing regarding migrants coming to the Tuzla Canton.

It was pointed out that, apart from a few incident situations, no major problems or misunderstandings of the local population were observed in TC.

However, the unconditioned place where migrants temporarily reside before continuing their journey has been highlighted as one of the biggest challenges that the Tuzla Canton is facing.

Prime Minister Tulumović thinks that a lack of coordination is one of the main problems.

“Better coordination of all levels of government would certainly give the best result,” Tulumović said.

TC Minister of Interior Sulejman Brkić presented the security aspects of this challenge and stressed that a systemic solution to addressing the migrant issues is to protect the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which would prevent migrants from entering our country.

The Tuzla Canton health system has coped with this situation very successfully and responded to all aspects of this challenge and received no reimbursement in return.

The MPs delegation expressed their understanding of the situation in the Tuzla Canton.

“The main problem is the lack of implementation of existing legal framework, which is the result of blockade of the state parliament and the state level as a whole,” stated Jasmin Emrić, MP in the BiH Parliamentary Assembly.

At the end of the meeting, the MPs expressed their appreciation to the Prime Minister and members of the Government for their time, the information presented, and commitment to the problem in general.

The participants of today's meeting will try to animate relevant state institutions in the coming period.

This is the first meeting and an opening of a communication, as well as an indication that delegates are willing to tackle this problem together.
