SARAJEVO, October 22 (FENA) - The entity hydro-meteorological institutes in BiH today received a grant aid in a form of equipment for agrometeorological observations thanks to the assistance of the Government of Japan.

On that occasion, BiH Minister of Civil Affairs Adil Osmanović, Japan’s Ambassador to BiH Hideyuki Sakamoto, and the entity institutes’ directors Almir Bijedić and Tomislav Šajić, signed a handover document at the FBiH Meteorological Institute.

“The Government of Japan provided the institutes with agrometeorological observation system, comprising of ten agrometeorological stations with the proprietary equipment.

Five stations each will be installed in the entity offices. Of these, four will be deployed at designated locations and one will be used as a backup station. They will measure the entire set of meteorological data, which will be measured in real time and automatically transferred to the servers of the institute,” said Osmanović.

The Japanese system for international cooperation was in charge of the implementation of these grants in coordination with the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs.

“Ten sets of agrometeorological monitoring stations are part of Japan's non-project grant aid worth about 1.3 million KM,” said Ambassador Sakamoto.

The importance of this equipment is reflected in the context of climate change, which in BiH has the greatest impact on agriculture. In the light of experience, he added, Japan is paying close attention to the prevention and protection against natural disasters under the Western Balkans Cooperation Initiative.

“For the first time, the FBiH Meteorological Institute will establish a network of automatic agrometeorological stations, which will assist farmers in planning, irrigation and other operations,” said the Director of the FBiH Meteorological Institute Almir Bijedić, and announced that next month representatives of the institute will participate in training in Japan focusing on disaster risk reduction, especially in agriculture.
