MEG project - Gradiška, Prijedor and Tešanj declared the most successful

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 18 (FENA) - Under the framework of the Municipal Environmental and Economic Governance Project (MEG), funded by the Government of Switzerland and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), municipalities and cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have been awarded the annual awards for successful cooperation, UNDP BiH stated.

In the past, municipalities and cities involved in the MEG worked hard to improve the delivery of public and administrative services, leading to better networking, inclusion of vulnerable groups and responding to their needs.

“In this way they have led to greater involvement of citizens in decision-making processes, strengthening of capacities of municipal and city councils, as well as more efficient and responsible planning and more transparent reporting on implemented activities of the local community.”

The most successful local self-government units in the past year were the City of Gradiška, the City of Prijedor and the Municipality of Tešanj, which, among other things, realized investments in the business environment, support to entrepreneurship, incentives and employment.

“Gradiška was in the penultimate position at the beginning of the project, so it was a big task in the past two or three years to restore this situation. We have taken all the necessary activities, and this year's first place brings us great joy but also an obligation for the future to do even better in the coming period,” said Milenko Pavlović, President of the Assembly of the City of Gradiška.

Milenko Đaković, Mayor of Prijedor, said that the MEG project broadly included the implementation of practical projects, but also facilitated the development of city administration and utility companies.

“In the first phase, we worked on the primary sewerage line, and in the second part, we will work on the sewerage pipelines. These are concrete projects that bring benefit to the citizens,” he said.

The MEG project aims to enhance the institutional capacity of 18 partner local government units (municipalities and cities) to apply good governance principles, ensure quality local services, interact more effectively with relevant stakeholders and create an environment open for doing business, job creation and economic growth.
