SARAJEVO, October 15 (FENA) - Project "Promoting diversity and equality" has begun in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will carry out activities related to the implementation of policies for the protection of national minorities, LGBT population and fight against racism and intolerance over the next three years.

“Support will also be given to state and other relevant institutions in changing sectoral policies in order to combat hate speech,” Deputy Minister for Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Saliha Đuderija said at today's inaugural meeting of the project, worth EUR 650,000.

BiH Human Rights Ombudsman Jasminka Džumhur said that it is important moment of the beginning of the project because it marks 10 years since the adoption of the Law on Prohibition of Discrimination and Sejdić-Finci judgement.

BiH Ombudsman Jasminka Džumhur said that first of all, practical differences between verbal act and hate speech need to be clarified during the project.

“The joint project is funded and implemented by the European Union and the Council of Europe. It is a project that builds on a previous one that addressed protection of national minorities, with two new topics to address - hate speech and protection of LGBT population,” said the Head of European Integration, Political, Press and Information section of the Delegation of the European Union and EUSR in BiH Krassimir Nikolov.

The Head of the Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo, Drahoslav Štefanek, said that there would be significant cooperation with locals, which would result in a total of nine grants to local authorities or civil society organizations.

It is important to carry out activities of the project because of the obligations arising from membership of the European Union, and in particular those related to the priorities set out in the Opinion of the European Commission.
