SARAJEVO, October 13 (FENA) – Husein ef. Kavazović, the incumbent Raisu-l-ulama of the Islamic Community in BiH has been reelected to a second seven-year term of office yesterday.
This was decided by a secret ballot of the BiH Islamic Community electoral body, which was held yesterday at the Gazi Husrev-bey Library in Sarajevo. Kavazović received 291 votes and his opponent Muamer ef. Zukorlić 82 votes.
Husein Kavazović was born on July 3, 1964 in the village Jelovče near Gradačac.
He attended primary school in Gradačac and then enrolled at the Gazi Husrev-Bey Madrasah in Sarajevo, where he graduated in 1983.
He studied Islamic law in 1985-1990 at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, then came back and did his master thesis at the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Sarajevo, in the field of Sharia law.
In 2017, he defended his doctoral thesis entitled "Codification of Sharia Civil Law on the Foundations of the Hanefi Law School in Egypt: The Case of Murshid al-Hayran and al-Majalla al-Ahkam al-Adliyyah - A Comparative Study” at the Unversity of Sarajevo.
He then worked as imam, hatib and muallim (lecturer) at the Islamic congregations of Srebrenik and Gradačac, before serving as mufti of Tuzla from 1993 to 2012.
In the early 1990s he was elected member of the Council of the Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He has contributed to the restoration and work of the Tuzla Mufti and the Behram-Bey Madrasah, the introduction of religious education in primary and secondary schools, and to the renewal of the Hikmet newspaper.
He is one of the initiators of the Center for rehabilitation of addicts on psychoactive substances in Smolučoj near Lukavac, the first institution for the rehabilitation of addicts within the Islamic Community in BiH (IC).
Together with his associates, he worked on starting and developing the Agency for Halal Quality Certification of the IC in BiH.
At the same time, he strongly engaged in the care of expelled and refugee population from Eastern Bosnia during the aggression, and reconstruction of the IC infrastructure in BiH, as well as the return of Muslims to their villages and towns.
Husein ef. Kavazović is the initiator of the Tuzla Summer Institute, which is implemented in cooperation with Cornell University (USA) and Behram-Bey Madrasah.
He is also the initiator of seminars for teachers of English language, which is implemented in cooperation with the US Embassy in Sarajevo, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Tuzla Canton (TC), Behram-Bey Madrasah and the Pedagogical Institute of TC.
He speaks Arabic and English language.
