SARAJEVO, October 1 (FENA) - Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Bosnia and Herzegovina Matthew Field visited today the Federal News Agency (FENA) and talked with the agency’s General Manager, Elmir Huremović about the importance of media in a democratic society and the role that FENA has in BiH society.

The interlocutors exchanged views on the state of the media in the digital society, where Huremović noted that FENA puts a priority on the accuracy of the published news.

Talking about the number of users for whom FENA serves as a source of information, the ambassador emphasized that during the mission to BiH he noticed that the news published by this agency have a wider audience.

Therefore, he was pleased to have the opportunity to visit FENA and meet some of the journalists and editors who work there.

“Working in the media these days unfortunately is not an easy or a safe job. Freedom of expression and freedom of the media are the foundations of a democratic society, and the United Kingdom strongly advocates for these freedoms,” underlined British Ambassador to BiH Matthew Field.

Considering that media freedom is the key to democracy in every society, Field said that FENA has a special role to play in that it serves as a direct contact with readers that know they can trust FENA and that, in his opinion, this is something of significant meaning in BiH.

As it was pointed out at the meeting, there is an imbalance in the media space between the number of negative and positive news in general, and Ambassador Field emphasized that positive news in BiH very much exist, but they are less known and reported.

"The Embassy and FENA can jointly promote these positive stories, and I think that would be our contribution to the wellbeing and benefit of society as a whole," Field concluded.

General Manager of the Federal News Agency FENA, Elmir Huremović stressed that the agency is the most quoted and the most credible news source in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“I am pleased that we share the opinion with the UK Ambassador on the importance of objective informing in building a stable and democratic society,” added Huremović.

He announced that FENA would continue to be a public service in which truthful and accurate informing of the public remains the key guideline. Huremović noted that, in the future as well, FENA will insist on sharing and publishing positive news, as all of this contributes to the creation of a better environment in BiH.
