Komšić and Dieng discuss the importance of the genocide prevention project

FENA Press release

NEW YORK/SARAJEVO, September 29 (FENA) -  Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić met in New York with Adama Dieng, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General for Genocide Prevention.

The two officials discussed the importance of the genocide prevention project. They agreed that any denial of genocide in BiH and crimes that took place during the aggression in BiH are unacceptable.

Dieng said that he has visited BiH and Srebrenica on several occasions, where he acquired a complete view of what happened in that area, with the aim of carrying out further activities in the prevention of genocide. He believes that intense meetings with the leaders of the region, with honest dialogue about the past and without denying the facts, are a prerequisite for lasting reconciliation and stability.

Chairman Komšić emphasized the absurd fact that even today, with surprising perseverance, the genocide committed against Bosniaks in Srebrenica and Podrinje is institutionally denied in the entity of RS, but also, in neighboring Croatia, through public and political actions of individuals, the crime of genocide against Serbs, Roma, Jews in World War II, under the quisling creation of the Independent State of Croatia is also being denied.

"After the genocide had been committed, negation and rejection have begun, and the glorification of the genocide and its perpetrators commenced, lasting to this day. One genocide does not diminish or relativize another,"  said Chairman Komšić.

The view is that the genocide prevention project must have a specific approach for each region, and that it should not fall into the trap of a superficial and generic approach.

Chairman Komšić stressed that hatred does not lead anywhere and that we should all, through positive dialogue, build a future for generations to come.

Komšić invited UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Adama Dieng to attend the Commemoration and marking of the 25th anniversary of the Genocide committed in BiH next year.
