Rais Kavazović: Safety of our homeland is in the hands of our Armed Forces

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 25 (FENA) - Protecting the integrity of our soldiers, his spiritual, moral and professional uplifting and training should not only be the duty of their elders, but it is the duty of all of us who bear responsibility for peace and security in the community, said in a statement today in Sarajevo Raisu-l-ulama of the Islamic Community in BiH Hussein effendi Kavazović.

Addressing the participants of the 3rd International Conference of Military Imams, which brings together about 50 military imams and chaplains from 13 countries, Raisu-l-ulama said that the task of religious officials is to help soldiers, through spiritual and moral growth and advancement, to better and more successfully understand all strata of a human being and to accept another human being as a being equal to themselves, MINA reports.

“The world we live in is getting ever more complicated. Traditional views of friends and foes have changed. This harsh reality requires us to rebuild our values. Learning about universal values, based on religious truths, facilitates our orientation in the present time. The Prophet Muhammed taught Muslims that fighting on the battlefield is only a 'small fight' while fighting with oneself is the 'big fight'. That's why we need events like this one. We need them to jointly question the values we stand for and fight for,” he added.

He underlined that Muslims in Bosnia perceive themselves as a bridge between East and West, as a European sovereign nation with state and culture, but also as a people who zealously cherish Islam as a religion of God's last revelation that humanity needs to step away from the darkness of hostility and hatred into the house of peace and prosperity.

“Our deep belief that people can and should live together with all their diversities, open in spirit and understanding, is the basic idea which Bosnia is based upon. Bosnia was multi-confessional even before Islam came to these areas. Unfortunately, throughout history, Bosnia, as well as the very idea of coexistence, has been the target of aggression by those who see diversity as a problem rather than richness and plentitude, those who fear others because of their own insecurities,” said Raisu-l-ulama.

“That is why it is good that today, you are in Bosnia, in Sarajevo, which has withstood the longest siege of a city in the modern history of warfare, where civilians were the main target,” said Kavazović, reminding that the siege lasted for 1,425 days and that on average, 329 mortar shells fell on the city on a daily basis, 11,541 civilians were killed, of whom 1,601 were children, while at least 50,000 were injured.

Even so, he added, religious buildings and sites of all religious communities have survived in Sarajevo and people are trying again to build a common life.

“It is this spirit that must be defended. We want to build our future on these values, as well as the future armies that will ensure a secure future for our children,” said Raisu-l-ulama.

The book "Islamic Concept of Peace, Freedom and Security" was presented during today's conference, and tonight, starting at 7.30 pm, an academy will be held in the BiH Armed Forces Hall on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Military Mufti Office, which Rais Kavazović, EUCOM Chief Chaplain and BiH Minister of Defense are expected to attend and address the dignitaries.

Military imams from the United States, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Republic of France, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Kingdom of Belgium, Qatar, Kingdom of Norway, Republic of Croatia, Austria and Switzerland are scheduled to visit Mostar and Blagaj tomorrow and the Igman Wartime Mosque.
